Review of 'Lulu' at the Hackney Empire

'Lulu' at the Hackney Empire

The set I built and designed for the production of 'Lulu' at the Hackney Empire October 2009

Animal Heads

The performance comes befor the painting.
I make the costumes and masks, then either set up a photo shot or a music video with my family as the performers. I then take the images and use it to build a painting from. This process helps me gain a better understanding of my narrative.

Owl on a fever roof

3mx3m.
Standing billboard stucture. Acrylic, Oil, Spray paint, gloss, glitter and wood.
The back is exposed and I have allowed the viewer to walk around the painting. The painting is full of enegry and colour and i have allowed the paint to move in a variety of ways to play with different applications of paint to work of each other.
Working with images from Fassbinder's Querelle and contrasting it with the musical 'South Pacific'. I have also explored my interest in the Soho doorways and the persuasive techniques to draw the audience in.
I am interested in the idea of fantasy and desire while exposing the painting of its materials. Contrasting the 'promise of paradise' to the literal reality of the materials of the stucture. Exploring the idea of a 'fake' fantasy.
